Partisan Zionism: Flagrant Apologism Upon Unfirm Foundations, Intellectual Vapidity Upon Bloodstained Stilts

In a fashion which was probably highly unwise I actually went to the effort of trawling through and critically analyising this comment brawl.

Now to be fair their was intellectual shakiness on each side and neither seemed to display the level of self-awareness I think you need to adopt when approaching this endlessly turned-over and incessantly debate. But the Zionists struck me as especially incapable of rational coherency.

A good deal of this stems from their inability to put all their cards behind utilitarianism. Indeed, any such case is effectively impossible to stage without plunging into the worse of Millian excesses and declaring that the uneducated barbarians of the Gaza Strip are worth less in pleasure than the high minded Levanites who bombard them. Even Zionism hasn’t got anyone mad enough to argue that. It is fairly blatant that it is the IDF which is causing the overwhelming majority of suffering and death (250 to 1 says it all, really) and so they are left with either talking about the relatively uncommon event of a missle caused fatality (which risks emphasising the ease of focus since amount of deaths from this imprecise method of fire as compared to air strikes is so much smaller that the scale is a personal instead of mass one).

That’s fairly clearly never going to work since if it’s an anecdote war the Palestinians are, for once, heavily outgunning their oppressors. So the second approach is perhaps their strongest: that of legitimacy. Endlessly distinctions will be drawn between the stateless terrorists and the state actors of the relative sides. Somehow efforts to “sap” the Palestinian resolve do not constitute “terrorism”. Military efforts to achieve political ends via militant force are distinguishable from those perpetuated by the true terrorists since the organisation of Hamas is one which is anti-semitic and genocidal, while the IDF is merely an army and must be considered a protective tool rather than an aggressive organisation.

Of course this rather makes things problematic for those who advocate Two State Solutions seeing as Hamas would be in power if the Palestinian state was a democracy (indeed, even if it was not they would probably defeat Fatah military, as they have done previously) and therefore the creation of a separate Palestinian state would simply be the creation of a Palestinian Defence Force with equivalant legitimacy to the Israli version. Which is why that is unlikely ever to occur.

But this is made especially awkward given that Israel’s firmest backers are American. The irony here is quite overwhelming. Here poster LFC invites us to:

Imagine a fully armed and organized 100,000 man army under Hamas. Do you think this is “better” than what Israel faces now?

I’m not sure about “better”, LFC, but that sounds like the sort of force that could wage a War of Independence.

However to be fair to the pro-Israelites the second strand of their argument can not be understood fully without their third: that each side has different motivations and therefore we must treat the actual consequences of their actions as substantially distinct bodies. The outcomes of Israeli policy and of Palestinian can not be compared directly and the context of the intent of the actors is of the highest importance.

In other words its a fairly twisted piece of deontology, which suggests that somehow the IDF is free from cause & effect while Hamas is not. Hamas must be held responsible for their (occasional) killing of civilians while the IDF are entirely at liberty to arrange raids where they know civilian death will occur. The amount of agony caused is an irrelevance so long as it is accidental. Inept execution of intent to kill is worth ending unconnected human life over.

How exactly this fails to distort entirely the meaningfulness of death and the value of a sentient being is utterly beyond me.

Furthermore this also often leads to the unfortunate that the Israelis no less than a blog commenteer in favour of their behaviour:

Palestinian suicide bombers directly targeted civilians. The IDF tries to kill military who unfortunately hide within civilians. Hamas tried to goad the IDF into responding in the hopes that civilians would be killed. The IDF responded and were in the propaganda cycle now.

So are we to understand that the IDF and its masters were all somehow unaware that assailing the Palestinians would bolster support for the Palestinians? That this would thus exacerbate the crisis and assure further footsoldiers for the Gaza Strip? Or are they simply unaware of the fact that massive loss of innocent life is occuring?

(That is the only argument I could feasibly accept for this: ignorance. Unfortunately…)

Strand four is the simplest: as we can not tell who has been killed and belongs to Hamas and who has been killed and does not it is assumed that the IDF was successful in its discriminate use of such an indiscriminate weapon as large amounts of high explosive delivered from a great height.

Not, I think we can agree, the safest of assumptions. But it seems that a large amount of weight rests upon it given the quantity of occasions that this action is couched in the terms of smashing Hamas instead of massive scale bombing killing everyone in the area struck, as bombs truly do tend to.

Naturally when this is accepted at all the standard line is to blame Hamas for their “perfidy”. What I am interested in is how a civilian based battle force could do anything but surround themselves with other civilians. They are not a distinguished military force in the official sense and it would be making themselves fairly obvious to present themselves in so blatant a way as purchasing distinct property. Now I am not going to act apologist for this bunch of low-life theocrats but I do wonder if distinguishing themselves physicially from their cover isn’t expecting a little too much of these asymmetric warriors.

And it is hardly as if Israel is unaware of this practice. Nor is it the case that the Palestinian population is filled with members of Hamas. Voters? Unquestionably, due to their hard-line on the people starving and pumping excrement towards the Palestinians, they have massive electoral support. But the Labour Party has far more voters than members, as does any other British Party.

Which leads us, inexorably, back to an earlier point: either it is acceptable to “punish” Palestinians for their views over who should run their country, to cow them into backing someone less hostile to Israel, to back state terrorism which sees these individuals as a collective to be battered and converted via attrition, or else hundreds of innocents are dying in an accident everyone is capable of predicting and continuing to .

And even this is politely disregarding the children of Palestine, as the ardent & partisan Zionists would doubtless have us do, who will remain forever unaffiliated.

Further Encounters of the Far-Left Kind

(Or: SES at Marxism 2008, part 2)

This time around I managed to gather myself from slumbers early enough to show up in time for considerably more sessions than the day before, albeit not nearly as early as the brisk 10.00 start that the meetings began with. I actually underestimated my lateness and ended up ploughing into what I thought was Labour and Alienation soon after starting but which was in fact Historical Materialism about to finish. Consequentially entry was a matter of ease; although in hindsight I probably left a SWP doorperson or two baffled.

I honestly can’t remember a lot about historical materialism, but as far as I can tell there was somehow a conversation about ethics going on, which was topically innappropriate but entertaining all the same, if only for a chap with shoulder-length dirty blonde hair who took to the floor and began talking about Kronsdat.

Now if I was looking for a sharp start to my day here it was: once this world was uttered things seemed to ripple and the effect was as delightful as I had imagined ennounciating such syllables in a room full of Trotskyites would be. Indeed, I merely deemed it a pity that I hadn’t beaten the chap to the bunch.

He was immediately followed by a bleached-blond lass who would later turn out to be somehow important who gave it some typical blather. Safeguarding the Revolution and so on, you know the drill. Never mind that their hero had overseen and executed the crushing of the epitome of the revolution, had to be done to protect a structure that they didn’t even agree with, see? The alternative being a far more popular brand of socialism than the Bolsheviks seeing control of the country and that…Uhm…Anyway…

The room was still left unsettled. The topic moved on and it was about some other stuff, with my recollection failing me over the materialism stuff. What was interesting was that as he was headed out of the room the chap who had asked was verbally hailed by a pair of Marxism “Staff” t-shirt wearers from behind a table, who wanted to give him the Kronsdtat Chat. I stuck around to hear this and the first man was firm and pulled away quickly by duties while the second was softer but spoke to us for longer, accompanying us to the lift and staying with us for a while.

Their arguments seemed to consist of a mixture of emphasising the importance of crushing the Kronsdtat threat, claiming that there were none of the original Kronsdtat sailors left owing to attrition from the revolution(s) against the Csar and the heavy losses of the Civil War (concerning this, as with all other matters of detail, you must consult Douglas or some other historian who is of this field rather than early Medieval as I am) , launching ad hominems (those that bring this up are bourgeois or anarchists aiming to discredit Trotsky rather than achieve anything productive) and talking about how the Bolsheviks agonised over the decision.

They also stated that the Kronsdtat make up was Socialist Revolutionary rather than Bolshevik, and this irked me: even I am aware that when Lenin briefly allowed an experiment in democracy the very reason he rejected the outcome was that the SRs won in a landslide, crushing the Bolsheviks electorally and demonstrating a level of support for the militants of an immensely smaller scale than they liked to presume. This considered, that there were plenty of Kronsdtat sailors Social Revolutionaries is hardly surprising at all.

Unfortunately all Bolshevik apologists dislike you bringing up their almost total absence of mandate about as much as Trots do his authoritarian atrocities. So we didn’t get far but the people we spoke to were perfectly friendly and their response seemed more an earnest attempt to explain their position rather than intimidation or anything of the sort. As ever the SWP seemed like a misguided but ultimately lovely bunch.

As we headed outside I encountered a large number of groups that thought otherwise. This was a set of people who’d cleared off before I arrived yesterday and were in some ways who I was there for. The SWP I’d already heard plenty from and now it was time for The Rest of The Left.

On Jews, Community and the Far-Right

Rather to my surprise I found myself disagreeing vigorously with this article on the BNP’s {futile} efforts to shed it’s anti-semite “image” and appeal to bigoted Jews using it’s new school rhetoric of virulent Muslim aimed bigotry.

{Bit of a mouthful, that last phrase. But then, so is “Islamaphobia”. I suspect that the failure of efforts on the left to combat that resurgent phenomenon is its inability to find a non-silly name for it.}

This is not because my efforts to peer around a part of the far-right from the inside has turned my head but instead for leftist reasons. All the same, I can not help but feel quite the contrarian for dissenting as forcefully as I do with this quote:

We, in the Jewish community, will not tolerate any form of racism or prejudice…I would be thoroughly ashamed if any member of the Jewish community voted for them.

That was from Henry Grunwald, who is in no less prestigious a position than the president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews. He is currently working along with Sikh and black aimed efforts to ensure that the BNP gain no seats upon the GLA in the forthcoming elections. Despite this it is my suggestion that Mr. Grunwald is currently acting as part of the problem rather than solution and that that quote evidences his lack of grasp on the only way to end racism and bigotry entirely and forever.

Firstly we must understand and appreciate the beast which we wish to slay. What bigotry of all stripes consists of is a rejection of the common worth shared by all sentient beings. This deceives us into considering some of those around us as of worth and dignity and others as separated from them and thus not. I would suggest that this is an entirely intrinsic element of human nature that can be reduced severely but never eradicated entirely. As long as there are those separate to us then this difference will be observed and many will consider the distance a mandate for degradation. As long as “We” refers not to us all but a specific group isolated and smudged into one we have something of a problem.

The argument for “diversity” is one that I can accept. We are all eclectic beings in our own various ways and to say that difference should be forcefully eradicated wherever it is found is certainly not my argument. I am many things and have been many more but conformist is not amongst them and, I suspect, never shall be. However I would suggest that realising and coming to terms with the natural tendency of humanity to differ in exciting and vivid ways is by no means the same as accepting society dividing itself into sects. For what is opposed is the separation.

How does this relate to Mr. Grunwald? Easily. He has divided a section of society that he considers to be as of himself. He responds to them personally in a way that he would not to the rest of humanity. He holds them to a different standard and treats their actions in a different way. He does not concern himself with individual circumstance but deems membership of this, entirely fictitious, group to be sufficient. The only element of this group’s identity which is even verging upon finite and tangible is their race. Mr. Grunwald is opposed to racism. Note the specification in his words. He would not feel ashamed if any Britain voted for the BNP, he would not feel ashamed if any human held such views, he would simply feel that emotion in the instance of a Jewish person voting for them. His area of humanity affect him personally in a way that the rest do not.

Why does this pose a problem? Because it is this very attitude that gives the BNP and all the fathomless plethora of those like it air for the flames. It is the viewpoint that considers our species divided into sub-sections that are to be evaluated and judged accordingly which leads the fragmented, distorted, perverted mindset which breeds intolerance. Let us not imagine that this destroys the reason of white Britain. Consider that Samson Blinded, amongst the most deranged blogs I have had the displeasure to read, would not exist without this perspective. Consider this article. Dov Lior has stated that “A thousand non-Jewish lives are not worth a Jew’s fingernail.” This sort of blatant nonsense relies upon the “Chosen People” myth, yes, but it also is entirely dependent upon viewing humanity as an inherently shattered mess of various groups that clash and shunt yet remain ever divided.

Zionism depends upon it, the most tolerable face of the expansionist nationalism that you can somehow appreciate the dogged, dog-ended imperialist BNP being in favour of. Somehow expect. But the brutality remains: Zionism desires, even demands, a Greater Israel and if the cost of this is the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians then where is the concern? They were not Chosen. Responding in kind the lives of Israelis are deemed something of negative value by Arabs, a concept more construct than observation in itself given that in Sudan various Africans have taken the title upon themselves and thus elevated their position above those of the “blacks” they slaughter.

It is the cause of every pogrom, from the most notorious to the most recent. The SS were taught that all Jews were ultimately the same and thus killing children was a pre-emptive strike. Elements of the New York black “community” in the ninties thought that the running down of a young child somehow condemned the entire Jewish “community” and thus the destruction of property and the fatal knifing of an overseas student could somehow be justified.

Where does this carnage all lead back to? The conflation of the differences desired by humanities to other and the worth of all, that is mutual to mankind. And as for the notion of somehow it being possible to sustain a society divided between sections that will enjoy each other, that is purely preposterous. The eminent Mr. Grunwald feels in a fashion that is far from isolated to him: once you are part of one group the rest are, by very definition of distinction, further from you than “your own kind”. You belong amongst them and thus, in whatever way, you are out of place elsewhere.

This is at it’s most observable when challenged. Noah Feldman wrote a highly telling article last year where he discussed the reaction of his Orthodox former school to his relationship with an Asian woman. This consisted of something that can be described in a single word: denial. A group photograph was taken of all the former members and both he and his girlfriend had been removed as surely as a comparison I have assured a friend I will not make. The response to this from some was striking, with one person claiming that Feldman was spitting in the face of those who had educated him by not accepting their reductionist view of humanity. Worse still can be found here where it is estimated “We lose approximately 100 Jews every day to intermarriage and assimilation” and quotes a website named “JewishSurvivalSeries” approvingly in that Intermarriage has created “A silent holocaust in this generation.” Which makes the PETA meat industry/Shoah comparison seem only moderately offensive.

The Nazis loom large, though. It is to be expected but their usage seems largely to be most perverse. They were mentioned as well in another reaction to the aforementioned article here where falling in love and having children with someone not of your own kind {end sarcasm} is constitutes an attempt to “Finish the job Hitler left undone.” To write about the utterly unreasonable air-brushing of his airbrushing is to adopt as your demograph “Subscribers to The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” This is an irony of the highest and blackest order as the very cause of the Holocaust was the fear of the National Socialists that the fine Aryan race would have its supremacy diminished and spirit perverted by the foul and insidious influences of the Jew. Inter-breeding was what was feared by Hitler above all, as well as seemingly by those touched upon by this foul meme which rejects division of humanity over ancient lies.

Those who propose inter-breeding being accepted, and perhaps encouraged, are those most likely to make it entirely impossible for second attempt at the Third Empire of any manifestation. Indeed Jew-German inter-marriage was perfectly common in German society in the years preceding Nazi ascent and had the rise been averted most likely would have solved the problem through semen within a matter of generations. What those in favour of “assimilation” argue is effectively the absolute opposite of the deranged rantings of Mein Kamph. Embracing the merge ends woes and improves mankind. But it also eliminates a threat.

The only thing capable of ensuring that another Holocaust occurs never again is an end not to pacifism {as far too many wishing to launch jingoistic japes ending in horrific carnage claim} but instead the dicing of our noble species.

But how can this come to pass? Well many would say that it can not. That it is an impossibility to degrade this differences. Pure idiocy. Something of that nature can not be beyond the realms of reality when it has happened often, on a more remarkable scale, before. The history of Europe is filled with enough blood being split by Catholic upon Protestant to leaves oceans overflowing. Although pockets of this remained strong, even upon the island a few miles west of England, it now seems to be entirely at an end.

The distinction between a Catholic and Protestant has dwindled to nearly nothing. There are substantial points of Theological distinction but the tensions have eased almost totally and before the face of diversity a Christian is a Christian. This remains not enough, though. The only force capable of purging this completely is absence, and atheism is becoming increasingly dominant. Once the void exists it must be filled and division is bound to occur there but at least over ethics based upon reason there can be rational debate, which is more than can be said for the inherently immutable unsubstance of faith. It is appreciable that the Board of Deputies would not approve of this but it remains the case and while waiting for belief to die out and their post to become an irrelevance presidents of it should evade such comments.

A notable example of an alternative approach to alienating bigotry is that of Barack Obama. He has simply treated the notion that his race proving an impediment as offensive. Not to himself, though, but the American people. Who would be so limited as to judge somebody purely by half of their genetic code? Not, of course, that dividing the world into Americans and non-Americans is a total improvement but it seems to constitute a fine start.

An alternative interpretation of this is that Obama is a man in denial. There exists and insidious remnant of racial hatred, or at least mild disdain, within America and to claim otherwise is simply a lie. This is to confuse the reality which is grounded and beyond our influence and that which exists because we think it into being. “Reality is that which will not go away when you stop believing in it”, it has been said. But although “America will never elect a black president” may once have been true, and could well have been had Obama responded differently, when confronted with someone who trusts them completely and is so clearly competent the construct known as “America” may well change its collective views on race.

The success is limited but obvious: even David Duke has struggled to assail Obama and upon the lofty heights of discourse to be found at the Stormfront forum there is a thread claiming Obama’s popularity constitutes a “Cult” but far more bile aimed at Hillary. On a matter of far more importance Louisiana, by some way the last state to accept the end of segregation, voted for him by a margin of 21 points. Cynics would point out his failure in districts devoid of many blacks or suggest that misogyny simply won out over racism but then, they were also the sort that said his campaign was an impossibility from the outset. This year has thus far been one of utter misery for them as they have seen their snide predictions toppled one by sneering one. Obama has managed to not only overcome the difficulties of a mixed race candidate {and those were difficulties provided by both sides of that heritage divide} but also the power of name recognition and a campaign machine that had previously seemed impossible to so much as scratch, propelling a figure that might as well have been deemed the de facto leader. That figure is now deemed as a curious absurdity for their refusal to abandon a cause all around her know to be long lost.

Prejudices have power because that is what the expectations of humans are. They have might because they are ideas, not because they represent anything which is actually evidenced in reality. Huckabee claiming that he wasn’t there when Evolution occurred and thus is entitled not to accept it is pure folly in a way that Obama believing himself to be capable of overcoming racial boundaries simply isn’t. Evolution occurred and to deny the vast wall of evidence supporting such a statement is to deny what is in front of your very eyes. To deny that racism will impede you is different in that the very denial will alter the reality that surrounds you.

So to return to Grunwald, what error has been made? A grand hypocrisy. “The Jewish community” is a fantasy, as are all others. It exists in so much as there are those that accept the delusion of distinction, once they no longer remain neither shall the sect. To use that to imagine that no member of it will exhibit “prejudice” is to condemn yourself to as much purely by making the claim. His presumption itself is self-condemning.

For as long as he feels differently when a Jew places a cross next to the British National Party to how he would do when a Muslim, a Sikh, Satanist or atheist does we will remain divided. {I am thankful, once again, for private voting.} For as long as his fundamentally absurd organisation and those like it remain in existence we will be left in a preposterous position where the individual is denigrated in so severe a fashion that it makes collective consideration of a group of autonomous individuals seem almost reasonable:

The Jews of Britain require Deputies who will represent no one else. The Muslims of Britain require a Council that will speak for no other. The British Jews are perfectly well represented and we should listen to the views of this apparent cross-section over them individually. The British Muslims are well represented and perfectly thoroughly spoken for.

Let us not linger here, I have no concern for his feelings but I suspect that he will not alter his views. A man in his position can not afford to. Let us progress.

The way forwards is an easy one. We must rise above the notion that we are a ship divided. Humans are only led apart by their own mutual delusion. This can happen due to differences in class or race and especially owing to some sense of entitlement based upon the irrationality that is religion but when such points of division are allowed to establish into “communities” things solidify and harden. So long as there are people claiming that one rule applies to an entire section of the species that are selected purely on the grounds of their mother we will suffer from the equal absurdities of the hate that follows. The two are intrinsically linked: if a largely imaginary division is made then hatred based around it will follow.

We are presented with a unique opportunity: race is etched into our genetic code, formed by the environment provided by our empirical surroundings. It can not be altered, misconceptions can be our only targets. A community, contrastingly, serves as an environment as well but can cease to exist the moment its membership departs the collective. Without steady merging amongst races the concept of “Black” or “White” can not be dissolved and their very presence forms a barrier, with even the optimum model taking many decades. For “Jew” or “Muslim” the same is far from true. Indeed you could argue that, although orientation is inherent, much the same could be said for “Gay”. Without members there is no community. Even if enough resist the unrestricted application the extent to which the unconsenting can willingly be yoked under the grasp of artificial commune is highly limited. After this our messy merge will prove easy enough: if Feldman was willing to engage in the face of such fierce approval imagine how many might scale those shallow walls without the sharp tug of disapproval yanking at their ankles. More than enough. Humanity would be largely indistinguishable and blissfully devoid of the empty prejudices it had once been plagued by, now rendered a logistical impossibility rather than mere source of official disapproval, that the young delight in mockingly flouting.

But let us not focus purely upon the benefits to the whole of mankind, but instead the gain for each person who formerly accepted themselves as a “Member” rather than an untagged, unqualified human. Once these communities are departed they no longer bind, you are amongst humanity rather than restricted to being amongst your own type of people, your own little narrow corridor of the boundless oceans of shared humanity. Terrifying? In its way. Liberating? More than enough to compensate.

If the Board of Deputies honestly wishes to end the BNP once and for all they would cease existence as an organisation, leaving a suicide note telling their respective Muslim counterparts and so on to do the same. As it is they have higher concerns but for anyone who honestly considers ending bigotry a high priority a more radical and rational approach than the one taken at present is required. Slapping fines and prison sentences on people using nasty words in public is hardly going to eradicate the source. An end to the view of humanity as consisting of mutually exclusive “Communities” which can communicate but never truly merge and become indistinguishable will. The human propensity to spin even the sparsest of material into hatred is rendered far less threatening by the absolute superfluity of our divisions.

Only pathetic appeals to tradition stand in the path of progress.

Reversing Down the Roadmap

530 new illegal houses.

An interesting response that. Rather like if the Amish reacted to the shooting of their schoolgirls last year by annexing a sizable chunk of mainstream America and rapidly using their low-tech methods of house construction to claim it. Apparently the settlers want to build eight new towns, one for each of the dead children. Because clearly the best way to cope with the work of a lone lunatic is to place further children at far more danger and actively provoke the Palestinians. Clearly.

Meanwhile the loathsome cocktail of Islamic supremacism and arab nationalism that breeds in Palestine gets a few galleons of fuel dumped on it. The fire continues to rage the beat goes on.

And on and on and on…

Oh yes, and 200 more once those are done too! We’ll have a peaceful, two-state solution in no time that way. All from a group that protect a school that is

renowned for encouraging students to become soldiers.

Ah, Zionism… Jews have never been the monsters depicted but the philosophy dominating Israel seems utterly determined that no arab ever figure that out.

Neo-Internationalism and the Internet Era

The implications of the internet upon the nation state are already being and have been realised and the cracks that they cause within the integrity of the concept can only grow deeper. There are obvious limits but these stand to be eroded rather than remain and are already of sparse importance. Quite simply the proliferation of free web browsers and various messenger programs have effectively doomed the fashion in which humans had previously confined themselves.

To understand how the exact nature of the nation must be considered: I have referred on this blog before to Benedict Anderson, author of Imagined Communities but his persuasive argument bears repetition here. Anderson argues that the nation is a largely a fantasy that was created primarily by the printing press. The existence of literature, varying from novels to newspapers, which addressed entire groups of people as one and used them effectively as mass characters {every phrase from “The Afghan people” to “The Sikh community” constitutes an instance of this} brought people into what they conceived of as a community much like the one which would exist in a town, despite for the surprisingly eluctable fact that that they are unlikely to meet any of those that they conceive themselves bonded to.

As the printing press enabled nationalism, then, so the internet enables internationalism. Whereas simply by merit of logistics such a philosophy proved vastly implausible courtesy of the technology available today I can switch between MSN Plus tabs and contact someone who lives in North London, on the other side of the city from me, at the same speed that I contact someone living in Australia, on the other side of the planet.

This inexplicably bizarre state of affairs is one which all engaged have become accustomed to to the extent that the action has reached a stage of normalcy and is not really worthy of commentary, not deemed remarkable at all. But such an act is truly unprecedented in human history, at least in terms of cost and convenience. To telephone another continent will invariably be a costly affair and one which will thus be distinguished from making a similar call to someone in Northumbria. Furthermore in order to undergo such an act you would, presumably, require somebody who you already knew who dwelled there, something which is unlikely to have occurred save for a prior meeting between the two of you and a degree of intimacy that you would covert further correspondence enough to waive internally the price of such contact.

Upon the internet things are somewhat different: you can meet those who live hundreds of thousands of miles away with ease in chat-rooms, forums or other places of virtual congress. Upon my own MSN list I have a Dane, Fin and Pole, three Canadians, five Australians, copious Americans, a Mexican and a South African, none of whom I have actually met. My AIM “Buddies” are all Americans I have not met save an equally unmet Netherlandian and a single wench from the Midlands, who I haven’t met either. I suspect that this is far from the most diverse assortment in existence. Why, I even lack any South Americans!

This is far from unusual and in fact seems to be something of the new norm. The possibilities for contact with the foreign is boundless, indeed no country has such a monopoly upon the web’s content that most of it is from their sources, making such interaction effectively inevitable. If not friendship then at least some degree of connection is experienced by all web users who do not confine themselves to the most narrow of areas.

The impact of this is likely to be the barriers that had previously restricted humanity into overly tidy boxes that they dared not depart from will be torn down. It is effectively impossible to maintain that your fellow man possesses certain characteristics that distinguish him from you in some severe way due to his place of origin when regular contact shows that he chats, nudges and LOLs just like you do.

The cause for this being such a success is simple: language. English has come to dominate the internet, often abandoned for considerable swathes but largely understood by all present. Far from the assumption of stilted and awkward phrases that one would intuitively expect from those speaking another mother tongue it is frequently found that those online, especially the ones that modestly apologise for its poor quality, discourse in a far higher standard of the English tongue than do most of those raised speaking it solely. The Dutch and Scandinavians seen especially adept, often using phrases far more eloquent than I could ever manage and embarrassing all us native English thoroughly by occasionally requiring us to enquire Dictionary.com.

The result of this is that the location of these formerly foreign people is simply that, where they are situated, not a vital component of their identity. The internet truly is capable of bringing together the globe. This is true of no piece of technology that has thus far been developed: televisions are controlled by the rich and only those with enough funding and authorisation can create and transmit footage. As aforementioned telephones require foreknowledge of who you intend to call. But through the web those endless leagues away can be met and interacted with eventually all the effort it takes you to message a family member in their bedroom.

The potential of this is boundless and demonstrated effectively earlier this month when Anonymous “Raids” were staged worldwide against the Church of Scientology. This group relied entirely upon internet communication and arranged to protest upon the same day and in a nearly identical fashion over the same issues and following the same cause. The V masks were worn by at least some in every location and all of them publicised the same website and told the same facts. All of this was filmed and photographed and then spread across the internet freely, for the perusal of all involved and any interested.

As striking as this was I find it unlikely that nothing similar shall ever happen again: humans are gregarious beings and previously had devised culture around the logistical difficulties presented to them by their borders, as well as the artificial ones imposed by those concerned with such affairs. But when groups such as 4 and 711Chan are openly tossing around self-declared memes that are followed by an international audience what restraint does local custom really pose? What thrives under such conditions is what is appealing, not what tradition dictates.

Perhaps too much emphasis can be placed upon those global gathering places that do exist: if Ebaum’s World and Gaia Online bring together the planet then what of it? There are ample users of the internet who do not frequent such electronic locations. Indeed neo-sectarianism is unquestionably in place as these latter two websites are openly and virulently despised by those who frequent the former. However, although websites such as Facebook and, to a lesser extent, MySpace tend to result in voluntary confinement to the geographic location in which you reside the likelihood of any internet user using all of their time here is low, indeed as are the odds of these two sites and those operating upon such a model remaining as dominant as they presently are. Otherwise, every source of hosting or searching accessible to the public are likely to result in results from other countries. The proliferation of blogs from a dazzlingly diverse array of cultures is likely to expand yet further, along with its impact.

The consequence of this is that chauvinism will become increasingly vulnerable to elimination through the destruction of the ignorance that supports it. It will remain possible to consider your own country’s achievements to be the greatest but to consider your nation’s people to be a separate kind of one to that found elsewhere will become a proposition rendered increasingly untenable, simply through confrontation to the indisputable nature of reality.

This is unlikely to be a swift process but I suspect that it may occur longer than people consider. The state is already suffering from the underwhelming of its authority through extra-national servers: Guido Fawkes hosts his site in America and resides officially in Ireland, rendering legal action nearly an impossibility and certainly an immensely convoluted process should anyone try to pursue it, while in Russia MP3 websites abound as a consequence of the lax laws present there courtesy of the “Shock Therapy” of unhindered, unhinged free market capitalism that was applied to it after the demise of the Soviet Union, with all other nations being able to access such portals and benefit as a consequence. The aforementioned Pirate’s Bay seems to be the Die Hard of websites: a thousand threats assail it constantly and yet it continues to move, refusing to roll over and die despite dozens of offensives that would have crippled the less tenacious.

These loop-holes are of less importance, though, than the way in which the planet’s inhabitants perceive themselves and those around them. It seems highly likely that more will come to the awkward yet glorious realisation that even those upon entirely the other side of this remarkable sphere of rock can be exactly the same as those standing right next to us, exactly the same as we are. Before this new dawn bigotry will wither and nationalism shall be bleached. As soon as it is over humanity will be something else entirely, all for the realisation that it is all much the same as itself.
